The park ranges from 2,000 feet above sea level to more than 13,000 feet, and offers an alpine wilderness, groves of giant sequoias, and Yosemite Valley. The 196 miles of roads and 840 miles of trails give access to these natural treasures by car, by foot and by free shuttle bus. Highlights of the park include Yosemite Valley with its high cliffs and waterfalls; Wawona's history center and historic hotel; the Mariposa Grove, which contains hundreds of ancient giant sequoias; Glacier Point's spectacular view of Yosemite Valley and the high country; Tuolumne Meadows, a large sub-alpine meadow surrounded by mountain peaks; and Hetch Hetchy, a reservoir in a valley considered a twin of Yosemite Valley.
Entering Yosemite - The Incomparable Valley - the view ahead is simply stunning - towering rock walls line the sides of the narrow, forested, U-shaped canyon and tall waterfalls cascade from the heights. In the distance looms the eye-catching and aptly-named Half Dome - a gigantic, granite monolith sculptured by aeons of glacier erosion. The awesome, perpendicular face of Half Dome - one of America's renowned Big Walls is an extreme challenge for the technical climber.
Granite Domes – Beyond the incredible;King of Yosemite's Granite Domes, extends the serrated peaks and rugged ridges of the Sierra Nevada. An eight-mile trail leads to a chained, climbing route up the eastern ridge to the 8,842 feet summit of Half Dome. Immediately opposite, Granite Point surmounts seemingly vertical rock walls and can also be reached by a tortuous path from the valley floor. Crossing the Merced River, a level trail through the tall pines alongside Tenaya Creek brings one to Mirror Lake where the still, dark waters reflect perfectly the rugged profile of Mt. Watkins rising at the valleyhead. Nearby smooth, polished rock surfaces plunge from the lofty, rounded top of Basket Dome in direct opposition to the immense, vertical wall of Half Dome across the glacier-gouged canyon. The shapely Sentinel Rock, the monumental monolith of El Capitan - another of America's;Big Walls; - and the graceful, twin pinnacles of Cathedral Spires rise from the green, grassy meadows bordering the banks of the tranquil Merced River.[Top]
Yosemite Valley Glacier – Yosemite Valley is the world's best known example of a glacier carved canyon, characterized by sheer walls and a flat floor. Its leaping waterfalls, towering cliffs, rounded domes, and massive monoliths make it a preeminent natural marvel. The valley is a mosaic of open meadows sprinkled with wildflowers and flowering shrubs, oak woodlands, mixed conifer forests of ponderosa pine, incense-cedar, and Douglas-fir, and abundant wildlife. Waterfalls around the valley's perimeter reach their maximum flow in May and June, and crash to the floor. Yosemite, Bridalveil, Vernal, Nevada, and Illiouette are the most prominent falls.[Top]
Sublime Scenery in the Sierra – Tuolumne Meadows and the High Country has the most rugged, sublime scenery in the Sierra, with elevation ranging from 7,000 to 13,000 feet. The scenic Tioga Road (St. Route 120), passing through an area of sparkling lakes, fragile meadows, domes, and lofty peaks that 10,000 years ago lay under glacial ice, affords superb views. Al Tioga Pass, the road that crosses the Sierra's crest at 9,945 feet, is the highest automobile pass in California.
At 8,000 ft., Tuolumne Meadows is the largest sub-alpine meadow in the Sierra, and a favorite starting point for backpacking trips and day hikes. The meadows are spectacular in summer, abounding in wildflowers and wildlife, but are gaining popularity as a winter mountaineering area. A trip into the high country will awaken your sense of wonder.[Top]
Glacier Point – Glacier Point offers the finest view of the entire Yosemite Valley, the 2,425-foot vertical drop of Yosemite Falls - the world's third highest ; and the panoramic expanse of the High Sierra. A full moon transforms the pastel granite landscape into a visual fairyland. Glacier Point is a favorite destination for cross-country skiers.[Top]
Yosemite Valley Giant Sequoia Groves – Yosemite Valley is giant sequoia groves - Mariposa Grove, the largest of three sequoia groves, Tuolumne and Merced Groves have endured for thousands of years and can live to be 3,000 years old.
